Education - (Chair Person: Dr. Rhonda Jones)
The overall goal of the NAACP Howard County Maryland Branch Education Committee is to ensure that all students in the county have access to an equal and high-quality public education by eliminating all education related racial and ethnic disparities. Through advocacy training, policy development and guidance, building collaborative networks and direct action, the Education Committee works to accomplish this goal with assistance from NAACP Headquarters, state and local education officials, teachers, parents, students, the community at large, as well as our other Partners in Education.
The Education Committee is currently forming a tutoring program to help students pass the High School Assessments (HSA). Beginning with the class of 2009, students must pass the HSA in order to receive a high school diploma.
The Committee is looking for individuals, especially retired K-12 teachers and retired college educators, to volunteer approximately 5 hours a month to help tutor students in one or more of the following subjects: English, Algebra, Government, and Biology. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Rhonda Jones at

or 301-483-8770.
On Saturday, 10/18, the Education Committee partnered with the Princeton Review to give a free sample Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) to students in Howard County. Twenty-five youth registered; 11 did so directly through the NAACP. In addition to taking the exam and receiving their scores for free, the students received a complimentary lunch, SAT study guide and Howard County NAACP backpack. See above photo for a picture of six of the youth who attended the event.
If you or your child is interested in helping with or participating in the next Back-to-School/Stay-in-School activity, please contact Dr. Rhonda Jones at rhondaj@ureach.com or 301-483-8770.
