Education Committee Monthly Report

Activities:
  1. On 8/16, our Back-to-School/Stay-in-School event was held at Guilford Gardens Apts. We were delighted to have approximately 30 students as well as several of our Youth Council members in attendance.
  2. A mailing was sent to approximately 150 Black-owned businesses in Howard County asking for contributions for our Back-to-School program. So far, we have received donations of school supplies for 25 students.
  3. Dr. Rhonda Jones has been asked to serve on Dr. Nancy Grasmick's (State Superintendent of Schools) Internal Workgroup on African American male achievement. Both the State and Howard County NAACP's interests will be represented.
  4. Dr. Jones represented the Education Committee by providing customer service training during the Black Student Family and Community Network parent volunteer orientation held earlier this month at Howard Community College.
Upcoming:
  1. Princeton Review is giving a FREE SAT mini-prep course to students on Saturday, October 18th from 9:00-1:00pm at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center in Columbia, MD. The Education Committee is working with the Youth Council to register as many students as possible for that free session and will provide a complimentary lunch to those who register through the NAACP.
